Difference between XPON from GPON and EPON

When it comes to providing end users with access to broadband networks, Passive Optical Networks (PONs) are crucial. Over an optical fiber, it is capable of sending signals from one point to multi-point locations. The whole process is done through Optical Line Terminal (OLT), Optical Network Unit (ONU), and Optical Distribution Network (ODN). The most common and well-known types of PON are GPON and EPON. EPON:   Ethernet passive optical network abbreviated as EPON. Computer network connections across telecommunications infrastructure are made possible by EPON. EPON uses Ethernet pack compared to GPON, who uses ATM cells. This is what differentiates EPON from GPON. EPON is used in FTTP and FTTH networks as a point-to-multipoint deployment. To establish a multi-point connection, EPON uses a single optical fiber channel. EPON delivers voice, video, and Internet access using Ethernet packets. 


For Ethernet, EPON is established on IEEE standards. When the matter comes on compatibility, EPON is completely compatible with other Ethernet standards. Hence no conversion or encapsulation is necessary when connecting to Ethernet-based networks on both ends. It can achieve transmission speeds of 1 Gbps and 10 Gbps without any problem. Compared to GPON, it's more cost-effective.

GPON: Gigabit Ethernet Passive Optical Network abbreviated as GPON. When it comes to voice, GPON uses ATM, while for data, it employs Ethernet, and when it comes to voice, it employs a proprietary encapsulation. GPON provides faster Gbps on Downstream and upstream speeds in comparison to EPON. GPON is made of new generations broadband standard of passive optical access. GPON is widely used in Fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) networks.

Upstream and downstream speeds for GPON are greater than those of EPON. 


The GPON network mode is the benchmark for hardware indicators due to its backward compatibility. The many services it provides are TDM, ATM, Ethernet, and CATV (the same as GPON). QoS Guarantee is another option. The software, on the other hand, will switch to an automatic detection and selection mode. When an ONU requests network data, the OLT will send it to it through EPON/GPON. If the ONU and OLT are incompatible, packet analysis across the network will fail. After a few seconds, the xPON ONU will automatically restart and change over to the other mode. When the transfer is complete, registration is done as well.
