GPON is a broadband passive optical access standard. FTTH networks use GPON. High bandwidth, varied service options, and wide coverage make GPON popular. It's considered the best technology for achieving broadband network coverage. Both downstream and upstream can reach 2.5 Gbps. 2.5Gbps downstream and 1.25Gbps upstream is possible.

EPON vs GPON differences: 


GPON offers ATM for voice, Ethernet for data, and proprietary voice encapsulation. On the contrary, EPON uses IP to carry data, voice, and video over a single Layer 2 network. GPON promises downstream speeds of 1.25 Gbit/s or 2.5 Gbit/s and upstream speeds ranging from 155 Mbit/s to 2.5 Gbit/s. The EPON has a symmetrical 1-Gbit/s bandwidth. GPON supports 128 ONUs. EPON has no ONU limit. EPON can deliver 32 ONUs per OLT using low-cost optics or 64 with forwarding error correction (FEC). EPON is cheaper than GPON.

Passive components' low cost means simpler systems with fewer failure-prone parts. The range is limited to 20 km or 12 miles. PONs are popular as the demand for faster Internet and more video rises.
